Outback '01 2.5 4eat VDC project

So couple years ago i bought myself my first subaru ever and after long time thinking took outback against forester. Didint had budget for newer one so went for some 2nd gen that i found

It was 2001 subaru outback 2.5 4eat eith rear LSD and early VDC package. All weather with heated seats, windows, climate control.
It has rear self leveling shocks still ok condition so i left them just put 2" spacer on top. Not sure is it made car harder and less comfy but it can take load very well. But its not soft car to drive fast on bad roads
Then i cut front bumper and put steel skid plate just for engine. Diy it myself from steel sheet from scrapyard

But flying to snow means no car. I can go with car from my country with shop to norway, sweden because must pass sea.. They have lots more snow then we do here. But then can find pretty cheap flights to oslo from here like from 15 euros to one side.

That's the most amazing thing about Europe. Everything is close and flights are cheap.

flihgts yes but then to move somewhere there with local transport or to rent hotel is like very not cheap,at least in norway. Finland is cheaper but then to see cool places you need to know where they are and how to get there. Like plan all that. then you see that it costs a lot.

3 euro DIY garden style max trax . vert good grip. didint brake after couple testing. seems pretty strong if not spin wheels on them too much

if too short just take 2 and connect them with tie straps

These might work in snow but independent tests of a number of different recovery systems in sand showed the milk crate solution to be useless.

True, but real ones are so expensive!!

Those not milk crate.
And those works fine in sand

Point was that i saw them cheap and wanted to test, not that i need them really, they weight like 0.5kg each so its no brainer for 3 euros to just carry them in trunk they ment for grass and stones so then you can allways use them in garden if no using

The term milk crate refers to the type of construction rather than their intended use. They are light plastic with an open lattice design like milk crates and they don't work in soft sand because they won't support the weight of the vehicle as the sand pushes up through them, unlike things such as Max Trax.

I get your point however, that in the context of the terrain and climate where you live, they do the job for you.

Easily fixed by application of some heavyish plastic sheet (i.e pond liner/building plastic) held on with zip ties. :)
I think the biggest downside of diy treads is lack of grip on them when the tyre is full of mud/clay.
Most brands of treads seem to be designed to dig the mud out of the tyres a bit.

Well i have sand too here and mud and snow and gravel and such maybe not stones though. But i was yet never in situation that i would thought: ohh i need puy something under my wheels. I mean i dont need those here too i just test them but i was never stuck there when i test them . i think VDC/ x mode works better then those tracks anyway.

iwait for more snow and its not happening still.. just not much to do in forest not enough snow

how VDC works on snow . how its tries diff wheels to spin and then check if car moves if not tries other wheels . in end it cut engine power too thats why so wierd farting exhaust sound

why they saying 2'' is max lift for outback and reason being those CV axle angles becoming too big. my 2'' lift and CV axles looks like allmost straight to me .. ?? am i missing something here ? or my shocks allready so bad that car sits lower then it would be with good shocks then .. ?

The springs hold the weight of the car, not the shocks. If your springs are weak the car will be lower.

yh but its hard to tell does springs become weak or not my ground cleareanse is kinda what supose to be with 2'' lift i guess. but could be more with new springs or even more with harder then normal springs. maybe too much even.
i wonder how does KYB springs compared to factory outback springs . do they same , softer or harder.

Harder from what I've read.

Yes, they are a heavier rated spring. Find the hub to guard specifications for your Outback and add 2 inches then compare it to your cars measurements as this will show if the springs have sagged.

or if someone with this model and new springs could measure that distance then i would compare , o ri just need to find where someone did spring change on this model and measured before and after. most i find are foresters.

new organizer and my large spherical rear view mirror that sees a lot
