VDC vs X-Mode

Tc button controls only traction control on newer cars that have TC button and not vdc button. So depends but in general 9n newer cars vdc allwayd works no matter what you push. Yh it needs learning curve as vdc is diff beast there. It doesnt like when you change throttle as well its better to keep it stable pushed like to floor on most cases or lower but 4wd tactics regulate throtle on subaru doesnt work well its better to keep it pressed until you pass harder situation. In most cases it will figure out all itself you just point wheels.
Vdc works on 2 stages if its fully on it will try brake wheels or cut engine power or both . And sometimes it just cuts too so much that it dont have enough torque to move . So that tc off button helps when you need wheel braking still but you need full throtle.

. Vdc alone will stop wheels that are in air or spin in not too hard situation. Lsd wont do nothing there
That brings to mind a question about helical/torque sensing LSDs. I've read that they essentially become open diffs if one wheel is in the air and a work-around is to use a brake modulation technique
Wouldn't the Subaru traction control apply braking to the spinning wheel and allow the helical LSD to work?

i think VDC will work with any system there even lockers so it will judge what to do depends on what wheels doing , but it hard to tell really what and how it will work , though it works . i guess if you take away some work from VDC , not sure how it will adapt to that on slippery road situations like snow and mud or wet grass. my point would be if VDC not enough try rear locker. if you need to change more stuff like do manual braking on wheels , then you better to choose car without vdc and then modify it as pleased.
but sure you can try other things and maybe you will have good results, maybe. still no matter what you do , you wont make it into 4wd and im happy with that it is not that.

Well vdc works ok with torque lockers so vdc will work with lsd too as some cars have it like mine allready
But good working vdc kinda no need in real lsd , locker that much better stuff. Vdc alone will stop wheels that are in air or spin in not too hard situation. Lsd wont do nothing there
I’m bumping an old post here, Scalman, sorry… but I’m very interested in your comment here, as I’m thinking about installing a Cusco HBD-183A hybrid LSD in my Outback, which also has VDC. Common sense would warn me off it (Cusco also state: ”VDC will not work correctly“) but I have a hunch they can work together OK. The traction control component of VDC doesn’t work for my very slow, low-throttle approach to rough tracks - I find the wheels need to be spinning quite fast before it wakes up, and I just don’t use that kind of throttle in those situations. For that reason, I’m hoping a torque-sensing mechanical LSD will respond better. If all else fails, I’ll just switch VDC off, but I thought I’d just double-check with you: your car definitely has an LSD? I only ask, because Cars 101 insists that VDC replaced mechanical LSDs, ie: they were not offered together.

@Dave Hansford,
Yes it has lsd . I changed my rear diff and replacement was lsd too. So i guess for that gearing as my have they all lsd..at least what we have here in scrapyards ..
Though that lsd is just for slippery situations on road..not much for offroad .more like for rallying style driving as it kicks that rear more..
And well if vdc works with rear lockers fine as people who made lockers shown then it must be fine with lsd's in rear too. I mean vdc just adapts to whatever happens on rear wheels. Even if they locked vdc will adapt to that ...
Then again its not enough tests done for all kind situations

@scalman,
Thanks Scalman! I think I’ll go ahead and try this… if the lsd and vdc end up fighting each another, I’ll just go back to the open diff, I guess. I’ve been watching your many videos with great interest - thanks for making them. I’ve also deliberately driven my Outback into various axle twisters to test the Traction Control, and it just sits there going nowhere. In fact, only once in five years has the VDC light ever flashed (and given a little beep) to let me know it had kicked in, on a slippery river exit. I’ll be sure to post on here once the lsd is fitted and tested…

@Dave Hansford,
Lsd dont fight anything on my vdc...and it works with lockers look at torq locker videos.
