What have you done to your car today?

The Impreza RS rally cars apparently went really well. A mate of mine sourced tensioners for me locally. Same as genuine, just not genuine prices, ex Japan. Why not a 2.5 quad? You must have a fair bit of blow by if you are already needing a catch can? Get a water pump too. What sort of compression are you going to run, also fuel, ECU? Sounds interesting anyway, will follow with interest. Do none of the local cams guys do cams for these things?

The blow by is mainly an issue for me as I hope to start doing some light rally/autocross racing in this car and all that sloshing around in a boxer engine creates a crap load of blow by. Oil getting sucked into the intake lowers the octane of the fuel which worries me because I'll be bumping the compression up to at least 11:1 maybe more.

As for fuel, I'll be running 98 oct the same as I always do. I'm currently sorting out all my handling braking mods first before I start getting into building up a new block. Went and had a chat with a Subaru specialist who builds race cars. Considering dropping a turbo motor in and having him do all my wiring.

With E85 soon available, why not go even harde on the compression and build the engine for that fuel. Blow by has become a real issue in our WRX club and some believe it may be sump related- testing continues. Something is not right when you put a new sump on and the car fills a 2 lite catch can in 3 laps of Wakefield Pk. What sort of coil overs, cage etc? I may have stopped being actively involved in rallying but it is still a great sport and the technical side still interests me. Interesting to hear more of this car as you go

Didn't really do much, but I did give my Forry a well overdue wash. I also gave it a polish & wax while I was at it. :raz:

Would love to go E85 but I still want to be able to head out bush in this car without any hassles. Wont happen often, but I don't want to always take my real 4WD unless it will be required.

I hope to build up a BMW track car in the future so hopefully by then E85 might be the way to go for me.

As for suspension, I don't really know what it is I want to do. I'll be going gradually. Going to order some heavy duty sway bars and mounts in the next few weeks and see how much they help remove the dreadful understeer that all Subarus have. I'll progress from there.

Anyhoo, today my borla replica headers arrived. Went to install them tonight but the bolts connecting to the rest of the exhaust are absolutely knackered. Gonna pull the whole exhaust on the weekend and do it properly. These bolts need to be drilled out.

Well, if you are going to rally the Subaru you will need to beef up the structure otherwise they won't hack it. Stitch weld the front end, re-enforce the front towers and fit a tower to tower cage. Stitch welding is not expensive if you do it yourself or have a mate do it, and the cage will probably be mandatory not only to comply with the regs, but for your own peace of mind. I know a bloke who went roof first into a tree when something went wrong. If not for the cage, he would almost certainly not have gone on to win 2 Targa Tasmania's. Many rally cars either have standard bars, some have none. There are many options, including 11kg centre diffs and plated front and rear diffs, but these are big $$$. So are Proflex shocks, etc. All will affect handling, but I'm not sure big bars are the answer for dirt. Our club is having a dirt day this Sunday, might check what some of the blokes are running now and get back to you.

+1 on the stitch welding, but wont be doing it for this Subaru. It'll still sort of be my daily driver. The type of rally I want to do with it is a lot of light tarmac and gravel stuff. More Autocross/Khana racing than actual rally. It's safe enough that there are no guidelines requiring cages etc.

As for the BMW when I finally get around to it...I'll be stripping it to a bare body and stitch welding and reinforcing everything and putting a cage in.

Bought a new set of headlight protectors today due to loosing one in a deep, deep creek crossing at the w-end (long story) :shake: :o

When I got home & opened the box (due to the incompetence of the person who labeled them with the wrong part number :furious:) they were the wrong ones weren't they.:furious:
I've now got to take them back to get the right ones.

Honestly, how hard is it to get these things right. :madred:

It always a 'downer' (and Aussies, especially South Australians, will know that is no good thing! :iconwink:) when something that is supposed to fit doesn't.

Sprayed the upper cylinder cleaner in yesterday- what a difference that made. Car is far more driveable. Also changed oil and filter. Dropped into a dealer today about the diff noise. They agreed it is diff noise, and looks like it will be repaired under warranty. They also adjusted the door to stop the wind noise. The wiper blades and rubbers needed replacing- they were shot. On the front, the previous owner had put aftermarket aftremarket blades and rubbers on, which were terrible. Cleaned poorly, they were very noisy and falling apart. Subaru quoted almost $90 dor new blades, plus rubbers. So I popped into a wreckers and swapped my dodgy brothers blades for genuine ones and put the genuine rubbers in. Wrecker wanted $20, which was ok I guess. The genuine stuff is infinitely better. Quieter by far, and cleans a whole lot better. Once the diff is replaced and I get the exhaust rattles out, car will almost be good as new

Horray, my brand new replacement front CV shafts arrived today in the mail.
Stoked. Gonna put them in this weekend.

Hey Rally, Silver has also mentioned using upper cylinder cleaner. Where do you buy it from? I keep meaning to use it, but I don't know where to buy it from.

Joel

Joel you can get upper engine cleaner from any Subaru dealer (parts department).
From memory, it's about $20-$25 a can.

I know how you feel mate.
Luckily, were I got them from, are only about 3-4 mins from me.

So after taking them back (& getting the right ones this time), I finally got them on. :)

Changed my front CV shafts today.
First time I've done it and it took a couple of hours to figure out the first one. Second axle removal and replacement took 20 minutes :discomonkey:

Was pretty happy with myself to be honest

1/. Have the Uniden GIS & CB powered up and operating!

2/. Worked out the detail of the rear spare whee + jerry can carrier with my mate who is going to fabricate it.

3/. Have details of a bloke to modify my front strut blocks.

All I did was give her a pat and tell her - "It's all going to be alright". :)
Replacement heads are on the way, just in case I discover I need them during the head gasket repair.
Finally happening, I've been taking my time about it.

Dropped it in today to have the rear diff replaced and fix the tripmeter. Not sure if they will fix the exhaust though. Will be off the road for a week! Bugger
