Outback '01 2.5 4eat VDC project

So couple years ago i bought myself my first subaru ever and after long time thinking took outback against forester. Didint had budget for newer one so went for some 2nd gen that i found

It was 2001 subaru outback 2.5 4eat eith rear LSD and early VDC package. All weather with heated seats, windows, climate control.
It has rear self leveling shocks still ok condition so i left them just put 2" spacer on top. Not sure is it made car harder and less comfy but it can take load very well. But its not soft car to drive fast on bad roads
Then i cut front bumper and put steel skid plate just for engine. Diy it myself from steel sheet from scrapyard

first snow... its still autumn but today we had this.

Nice, I haven't been out for ages. :(

Yh me too. It was long time since i took car and myself to some nature. Was so relaxing better resting then at home

I have those in my Triton / L200 - very handy!

My 98 Foz had no back pockets in the front seats..... so I replaced the front seats with ones that did lol
Very handy organisers tho
Good work

Also love your sump gaurd
Did you make it yourself ?

yes just took couple peaces of steel from metal scrapyard and put there. could be bigger more to sides but it does the job. Wasnt making whole for oil changing on purpose so less dirt would go inside. its just 4 bolts when i change oil is very easy to remove.
one time car was backing up and hit that front short section with its trailer hook. just bend it , i remove it and fixed with hammer. put back on. women that hit me panicked so bad , i just said : forget it its fine. if i would had full bumper then it would be broken bumper.
about that organizer if your mom or relatives have sewing machine they can make better organizer then this. but it was so cheap maybe 2 euros for that one. so i took 2 and i took 2 organizer/boxes for trunk

The articulation is very good.
I am wondering if you were able to make any comparison of before and after you removed the sway bars to see whether having no sway bars would allow you to get sufficient traction to go places you couldn't when the sway bars were still on.
I'm interested whether your VDC was able to compensate for the lack of flexibility in the suspension,

yes i could feel difference in articulation. and because VDC kinda compensates that in some level, still having more traction with more articulation makes VDC cuts engine power less, because i cant switch off just traction control as later models can , so any traction im staying in for longer times improves my capabilitys.
VDC works well in situations when 2 wheels does have no traction in air it compensates then to those other wheels and car can move. but just in some level. it cant do that if i in very steep hill or its just dont have enough power to move car. but if it cant move car it dont waste any power for it and dont spin wheels for no reason not braking CV's not using tires for no reason.
sway bars off made difference where before i had wheels in air just so quick and now i still have them on ground as VDC cant compensate all. so if my front wheel drops lower and touches ground and with that i have grip because my sway bar not stoping that im glad for that. and i can drive car at high speeds and change lanes and such still no prob. i just get used to it and now car feels like normal car for me, because i got used to it. dont feel nothing dangerous yet in that.

2 wheels in air or lost traction, first they spin but in second VDC figures out what need to be done so car could go forward so its stops those wheel that do nothing

and you can mess up VDC system if you keep stoping accelerate and then do it again and then drops as you could think you need to do when yo ustuck, but traction control systems most of them works in same way, you need to show it you want to go forward, means just keep accelerating not stopping that.
so you can find that some people messing up VDC systems and then blame that they dont work.

here very nice point when VDC starts to work. again just 2 wheels have some traction.

there non VDC cars would just continue spin wheels non stop and dont go nowhere just dig themselfs down.
and maybe thats why it work so well on snow. as all wheels still on ground just they dont need to spin so fast, plus 2nd gear fixed works miracles on snow.
and more articulation for VDC means it can find better traction and use it better and quicker . and when your all wheels have traction but they all spin then VDC can just save the day and make it so easy you wouldnt even understand it was any hard.
as VDC in those older models likes to cut engine power so often to compensate and often makes things worse, when its better articulation it dont need to cut engine power so often maybe makes it and my life much easier i guess. everytime i drive it and test it learn some new things about it really. and next time im using that knowledge to my advantage.

newest thing for car that was needed for long time. normal air compressor powerfull enough

tried lower preasure to lowest about 1bar and then pump it to 2 bars with it. it was pretty quick.

I reccomend getting a push-on fitting for it (it looks like you have a screw on one) so you don't have to screw the hose onto the valve.

Make the job soooo much easier :)

I 2nd this....
Usually quite cheap too but saves a lot of time, That’s if it doesn’t take long to inflate each tire, otherwise the screw on type can be more practical as it’s a pain having to sit there the whole time.
My mate has a smaller tire inflator and it’s not bad at all but takes twice the time mine takes to inflate a 35” tire from 18 psi to 45psi, mine was doing it in just under a minute, his took nearly 2.5 min!
big tire tho compared to the soob lol

Do you have tire deflators?

No that what i thought it will be with this but its not. And its not fast put on thing but you need to screw it on. So bad. I will change that end conector to that fast one.
So what i could use as deflator? Maybe that gun thing? But then i need to turn on and off that compressor with switch so i need to have that near me.
It took me about minute to inflate tire from 1 bar to 2.1 that i use in city or 15 to 30 psi. So that was not long. Wouldnt be a prob for me do all 4 tires even larger tires it could do fine i guess.
And that manometer was working weird too at first well its kinda slow. It takes time until it shows right number you kinda need to wait until it raises up. Not like those others who show that in second. Duno why it was that way. But it was working just not that fast.
And nice its detachable spring pipe.

Mine clips on. don't have to stand/sit there.

Saw a reasonble deflator setup on a Drifta Video the other day, a double banger for inflating and deflating two tyres at once - great for keeping the sides even.

The clip on type attachment is the best way to go !!

I use these deflators

You pre set them to whatever psi you like and can screw on 4 at once for very fast deflation of all 4 wheels at once, or can use 2 and lend 2
so 2 cars deflate fairly quickly.
Highly recommend
They are accurate and stop themselves.
Slightly pricey unless you grab them when they come on sale.

Cheers

I had a set of the cheapies from ebay & they were useless. Would never stop at a preset pressure, was all over the place. I now use a quickie tyre deflator. It's quick & accurate & you can go to any pressure you need.
