I am having my head gaskets replaced and the mechanic has said I may as well do the Timing belt, and the clutch while I am at it. The car has 150000km and for a total cost of $4750.

From what I have gathered the OEM clutch is a flex clutch or Dual Mass Flywheel? Just wondering if an SMF Clutch is better for off-road driving on the beach and towing a small trailer for camping.

I have read all different opinions on the net but wondering if anyone here has done the conversion and what they thought of it ?

Thanks

Had my Dual Mass Flywheel replaced when car was about one year old as it was squeaking. Have had no problems with "normal" clutch in last 350000 kms apart from them lasting about 150/180k kms. A mechanic told me that the Dual Mass can be expensive to replace because the bolts(?) holding the two masses can jam and distort and are difficult to remove. They must be drilled out. However I have no direct experience of this. I am on my, I think, 3rd "normal" clutch and no unusual issues at 383000 KMS. The car has done its more than fair share of off road work.
So I would recommend the conversion.
Certainly if the timing belt has not yet been done then most certainly it is a must.

I had mine done a few years ago in a similar situation (head gaskets - 'might as well do this that and the other etc')- results it freer revving engine, much better bite on take off, and no shuddering or complaining.

My 2003 XS was a lot more free and willing to rev, after having the DMF replaced under Warranty.
Had no adverse effects on the vehicle or driveability.
