Outback '01 2.5 4eat VDC project

So couple years ago i bought myself my first subaru ever and after long time thinking took outback against forester. Didint had budget for newer one so went for some 2nd gen that i found

It was 2001 subaru outback 2.5 4eat eith rear LSD and early VDC package. All weather with heated seats, windows, climate control.
It has rear self leveling shocks still ok condition so i left them just put 2" spacer on top. Not sure is it made car harder and less comfy but it can take load very well. But its not soft car to drive fast on bad roads
Then i cut front bumper and put steel skid plate just for engine. Diy it myself from steel sheet from scrapyard

new version of foam car camping mattress. i cut sides so they not fold and they 2m long so i fold it in place there it become like pillow. now it 4 layers . very comfy.
will go tomorrow to beach again for 2 days. and it was cheap because they are not good quality foam thats they cant sell or use so they sell them for cheap. i payed for those 4 just 10 euros.
and its better this way as i cut it just to fit not like before it was too wide so it was taking some space on sides. now its even more space to sleep.

after 2 nd time on beach sleeping in car was amazing and comly and plenty of space for 2

Nice. I'd like to be able to sleep in my car. Problem most of the time where I am is that you'd either cook due to lack of fresh air, or suffer death by mosquito,

i had those problems too. so i bought couple sun shades smaller and one bigger and that bigger just goes on top on my dual sun roof that second large one. i put it from outside and it was holding even with wind there as roof rack bolts where holding it in place.

so now i had some breeze from sea wind and no mosquitos.
another thing i could add is slightly opened rear door maybe so it would be even more breeze. i saw somewhere thing like adapter for trunk door to be locked but not closed completely. its just some peace of metal that fits between car hook and door lock.
i mean like this thing

just need it make it so it fits my lock. it could be done simply but could be good that door wouldnt move and ratle when it that position

It didn't need that bit anyway. :)

It does hook up to most stuff dig in and it was cracked allready . now its softer too so even if it would hook onto something it would just bend and let go. And departure angles are not just even groung so now its at same height as car body. More space to just drive trough something. And i was just curious how it would look.

Cool setup with the bed and sunroof shade!

As for the rear tailgate, you could make up a fly wire net (or modify/use a camp mozzie net) that goes over the whole tailgate and hooks under the rear bar and back to each wheel well. Max airflow if not too cold and will keep the mozzies out ;)

Rear bar cut looks good, especially from the rear view!

Cheers

yes i know i damaged wheel stud and i need to replace that one to new . so for now driving on 4 bolts. would be good maybe to replace all bolts too as some of them kinda harder to screw then others and they might be some damaged inside.
and i didnt yet put LPG filling thing. need to drill round hole in bumper now and just bolt it there. it will be higher too which is safer then before as it was hanging there .

someone said i didnt needed cut rear bumper... well i did needed. thats what i gave me

no way to drive up there in reverse with full bumper even with lift. now i have about 48cm space there all over till wheels and i can use that all. there is no engine no nothing that could get into contact.

ohh and fun in sand tracks...someone dig hole there. hi lift jack saves the day. its just that simple and fast to recover car with it.

yes outbacks have long nose and much longer rear then foresters so modificatio nas this gives me more ways to use it to drive it . more simplier to reverse it then before. so thats great. and i know forester rear bumpers have bad reputation as well , they catch stuff and they brake if you push on them. and i did needed it to be looking similar to stock so it would look like legal on road. and it looks like it still. so thats good. thats what i needed.

I love the look of the outback’s such a great car with many different engine options. If I was to buy another Subaru it would be a outback.
But I’ll be stuck with my EJ22 foz for a while yet I hope.
Do you have a before and after for the front cut as well ?
Seems fit to insert that one here also[emoji6]

Hi Scalman,

How do you manage to use the high lift jack on a Subaru? I would have thought the bumper wouldn't be strong enough.

i just made adapter for hi lift and then welded tube on car so it would be safe and easy to lift front of car. will be doing same for rear as well

yh i chose outback for those reasons too, mostly for comfort inside, climate control and for VDC that you can get for same money. somehow in my area older foresters cost more then newer outbacks which is crazy but that whats popularity makes.
