Given that there have been a couple of queries recently about snorkels, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread. :twisted:

The fact that I am looking for one for my Outback has nothing to do with it, of course ... :rotfl:

To make it a bit easier I will post links to subaru snorkel install posts on ORS here. (This might take me a couple of days, as my home land line is down, so can just crib a bit of time at work.)

If the mods think it breaches forum rules regarding cross posting I won't be offended if they delete the links.

(Not an ORS link, but a blog worth looking at for late model Outback owners. :lildevil:
About the only thing it lacks are manual Dual Range transmission - with L series low range mod, of course, and rear LSD. But that would be off topic for this thread!)

I have been thinking about a snorkel for a while now. I am leaning towards 3" stainless steel piping with rubber joins. I have come accross some people commenting that alluminium would be cheaper and lighter, but its probably not as common as stainless.

Other idea is mild steel with a coating like Jet Hot and then painted black. This will probably be the heaviest option though.

Definitely interesting to see what other people have done, and a good idea to put it into one thread.

The snorkel I chose was the one that fits a NJ-NH Pajero (1990) as it was the closest size & shape. I then took it to a plastics fabricator to have it bent a little more so as it matched the A Pillar better. :iconwink: :)

Personally I think this is one of the best looking Snorkels I've seen fitted to a Forester.

I am making inquiries via another Forum to find the owner of this Forester and get more data as to how he fitted it
and where he got the snorkel in the first place.

I enquired about this particular snorkel about 3 or so years ago.
He told me that he had moved north & didn't really do them anymore.
When I spoke to him about it he said he'd get back to me soon. About 6 or 7 months later, he finally got back to me. :shake:

I got Bryan's email address from SCQ thanks mate.
Unfortunately he sold the Forester a long time ago apparently.
 
"Stealth" snorkel

OK, have been thinking a bit about an alternative to a full-on snorkel.

Am I losing the plot, or would this do the trick for what we need most of the time?

Sleeve valve ‘Stealth Snorkel’

1/. Plastic / pvc tube, sized to fit around air intake tube, behind the air intake.
2/. Series of holes – approx. 25mm diameter – drilled in line along the top of the air intake tube.
3/. Corresponding set of holes drilled in the outer ‘sleeve’ tube.
4/. Low line ‘filter box’ fitted to the sleeve tube, also with corresponding air holes.
The filer box must be able to fit between the top of the intake tube and the underside of the bonnet.
Alternstive valve arrangement:
A ‘ slot’ valve, running parallel to the axis of the tubes could be utilised, rather than a series of circular holes.
This arrangement would be opened / closed by rotating (i.e. ‘twisting’ the outer sleeve around the OEM tube) rather than sliding it along the OEM tube.
This arrangement would maximise the size of the opening between the 2 tubes, to maximise intake capacity.

How it works:
i/. Stop the car prior to entering water hazard.
ii/. Open bonnet.
iii/. Insert a waterproof ‘membrane’ in front of air intake / inside air intake prior to filter. [This could be a thick plastic bag fitted between the intake ‘dam’ and the face of the filter. The locking mechanism between the ‘dam’ and filter box would hold the ‘membrane’ in place.]
This will stop both air and water from entering via the air intake.
iv/. Slide sleeve valve towards the rear of car, so that the holes in the air box/sleeve and the OEM air intake tube are aligned.
This will enable the air intake to be fed via the ‘sleeve filter’.
v/. Close bonnet and proceed to drive through water hazard.
vi/. After crossing water hazard reverse the above process to reinstate the standard air intake.

Advantages:
a/. Eliminates potential to lock the engine as a result odf water entering via the air intake.
b/. No need to drill holes in the inner & outer guards.
c/. Enables standard intake to be used other than when undertaking a water crossing.
d/. Easily reversible – just fit a new OEM air tube.
e/. Necessitates stopping and getting out the vehicle prior to a water crossing.
[This encourages the driver to walk the crossng to, evaluate depth.]
f/. Very considerably cheaper than an external snorkel.
g/. Will surprise the cr@p out of the ‘big @ss’ 4x4 brigade!
 
I love the way you have integrated the 'camo brown' paint job, but why leave the background white - and what for you paint the lights? :twisted:

just purchased a pajero and a hilux snorkel, going to see which looks better and is easy to fit on my 06 forester
