Hey everyone, I know what yabbies are and thats about it. How do you catch them. Where do you catch them? I know you cook them like crawfish, and maybe more than boiling? Any input is welcome. Thanks

Catch them yabbies/marron in streams and on farm dams (drinking holes) where they have been artificially placed very successfully for many years, usual method is a wire cage with some chicken pellets in some kind of sock so it takes a while to eat them, probably cook for about 3-4 min in boiling water or on the bbq or even in a fire on the ground.

To kill the yabbies (freshwater crayfish) place them in the freezer for about 30 min or in a bucket of icy brine (salty water) for about 15 min. You need this brine at the end of the cooking process as well to chill the hot yabbies, stopping the cooking process!
There are many ways to cook them but simple is best, IMO, just add 250gm of salt to a pot of boiling water then throw them in. Small ones boil for 1 min 40 sec large ones 3 min 10 sec (wait for the rolling boil). Remove and chill in brine straight away. Plenty of recipes on the net for other tastes. Split green ones and BBQ with your favorite marinade is good too. Check the DPI & Fisheries sites in other states for regulations etc. Potato peel or rockmelon is a hot bait. Opera house pots do a good job of trapping them.

to catch them as kids we used to tie abit of fishing line or twine onto abit of meat with a bone like a chicken wing etc. tie the other end of the line to a stick stab it into the ground and throw the other end into a dam, go away for 5-10minutes, then slowly pull the line out of the water and grab the little guy.

Or wait till its really raining for a day or two and walk down the driveway and pick a few up. they walk around on land alot at night when its wet.
