Just stumbled on this while modding my grille. I painted all the chrome black and I wanted to keep the logo clean, so rather than taping it off I decided to remove it and put it back after painting.
In the process of removing the old sticky pad, I noticed the paint was coming off and taking off the color from the emblem. I decided to get a little creative and I sanded the backing off the entire logo.
The cool part about this, is that the stars in the emblem are actually imprinted into the back, so it's lower than the rest of the surface. This left the silver paint perfectly intact where the stars were, and stripped the rest clean.
I then taped off the front and gave the now clear back a few blasts of black epoxy spray paint. Once dried, the black paint was visible behind the stars on the emblem. This method could be used to turn your emblem pretty much any color, and even do some interesting designs if you get creative. Hope you guys like it, and feel free to copy the hell out of it.
