So all of a sudden this whining noise has appeared. I assume gearbox or that region because clutch in the whine goes away and then when its re-engaged it appears again. Doesnt make any noise above 80 either.

What am i looking at here for repairs??

Our mechanic of 15+ years does not recommend fully synthetic gearbox oils for Hondas or Subarus. He recommends semi-synthetic oils for both.

And yes, I recommend changing the gearbox and diff oil at that mileage.

Interesting.

Last box oil change, I put Penrite full synth in. Previous changes were the usual Castrol dino.

The synthetic gave me significantly better gear shifts when cold. Completely removed the baulking that had always been there.

Ross recommends semi-synthetic oil, not mineral oil, Duncan.

IIRC (it was about 6-7 years ago!), he said it can cause problems with the synchro. However, a lot can change in 7 years ...

So at the end of the day the whine was next to nothing. So going to change the oil of the trans amd as recommended the rear diff. Also a good time to do the rear diff breather it would seem.

Keep an ear out for that noise. It can be an indication that the upper layshaft bearing between 4th and 5th gears is on the way out.

If it begins jumping out of gears (3rd and 4th at light throttle), start looking for a good used box!

This happened to my sister’s gen3 liberty- 420,000km and we’re not sure when the oil was changed last. It was something I overlooked when we got the car at 330,000km.

1WD_Foz had the same sort of issue. That box is yet to be opened up and diagnosed to see if it was the same issue. This one wasn’t jumping out of gear though.

Cheers

Bennie
