Hope someone can help!!!!!Got a '99 Outback with a snapped tailgate cable. Had quotes for new one, been told 'no go' on that one have to buy whole set-up $250ish.. Can anybody tell me a good quick fix or what other car can I snaffle a cable off that will do the job. Been told maybe a HQ wagon cable?????

:welcome: peartree!!!

Like eden said, I think we need some clarification on what cable exactly. Does the Outback have an interior tailgate release? Or, is there a cable that runs from the handle on the tailgate to the release latch?

I hate to say it, but sometimes with these parts it can be an all or nothing situation. Have you tried calling a wrecker? Might be able to find a used one for a lot less. If you can take it apart, take some pics of where it's broken, and someone here might be able to figure something out.:)

G'day peartree & :welcome:

As carljwnc said, if we could see the exact part thats broken, I'm more than sure that someone here will be able to help you out. :)

not bad for a female !!!!!

I've just done pretty good bodgey job even if I do say so myself. Anyway it's the cable that runs from the tailgate handle to the actual latch it's only about 7-8 inches long. It had broken away from the mechanism from the handle, managed to dig up a little thing with the loop in the end you crimp on the ends of car audio wires etc, crimp it to exposed cable end then found some copper wire[easy to manipulate] and connected it back to the handle mechanism bypassing the piece the cable broke away from. Sounds a bit long winded but, guess what!!!! it works, don't know for how long but easy to fix again if need be.
Ooops nearlly forgot to thank everyone for their quick response to my ? . Good Stuff!!!!!!
