01 forester homemade mesh gril (started)

so i hate the look of the US model SF grill, and i cant bring my self to spend $200+ on a JDM one... so im gonna make my own:)

its a pain in the butt because the grill doesnt have a border piece that is solid, it has connections between it (as u can see in the top of this picture)

now came the dirty work, which was much harder to cut than i expected!

it was really hard to get thru the thick parts with the dremel so i opted for this ancient jig saw POS

it was a little easier, but i decided to have my dad come hold it while i used our big jig saw (no picture) and got it to this point:)

then back to the dremel for some fine(er) tuning... and also cut the border piece

then finally after some sanding and more dremeling i was able to get it fairly smooth

EDIT!

found some mesh at pep boys and plaits dipped it! (plus clear coat for strength)

then cut it out to fit perfect

just the start of bond and sanding!

some of the stuff i used

so i thought the mesh would be easy to find at a hardware store or something, turns out its not... they only have ugly chicken wire stuff.

It's easy to get over here at Supercheap Auto. Was about $30 for a piece large enough to do the whole grille. (I didn't use it for that though: I used it for some holes I cut in the bullbar.) Comes in different colours too.

here's a link to the product.

click on the menu on the right to look at various colours.

I'm sure that all your hard work will be worth it once it's finished. Looking forward to seeing it when you're finished

This should look pretty good! I don't believe i have ever seen a car w/ a chicken wire grill! Spray paint that wire chrome & call it your own

you can buy mesh grill on ebay.
next job is to mount your spotlights behind the grill :)
