I know Toyota done it on my parents Hilux when they bought it. It was like a special wax or something similar which was sprayed on. I'm wondering this as i am respraying my 99 Outback and while sanding there is a very thick wax like coating which so far i cannot remove with wax removal products. So was anything like this offered for Subarus around that era?

Things like that are generally organised through the dealer, and as such they vary from dealer to dealer. Check the owners manual, which should list the dealer the car was bought through new. If anyone is left at the dealer from that time- they tend to have a high staff turnover-perhaps they can tell you who applied it for them. Foolow the trail and see where it leads.

Yes, it's called "clear coat" and was standard on Subies.

This is much more then a clear coat. And I'd be incredibly disappointed in a manufacture if that wasn't standard on every car!

The dealer I bought my Forester from did try to sell me this "incredible paint sealent/protective coating" or what ever they call snake oil these days. Really persistant about it to and I almost walked out on the whole deal. Don't want it or need it thank you very much. :monkeydance:
