This was the beginning...and the 'swift' end to our Richland Rd. trail run. Thanks to Doug and his lovely wife Renee for the video.

On the way in the water was over this bridge (previous to this, running along the road beside the creek, I had already figured this trail was NOT going to happen), 15mins. later when we had to cross it again, it had probably doubled in depth. Yes, we were witnessing flash flooding in action. Again thanks to Doug and Renee for the video.

Do not despair though...back up plan was put into effect...

...just a mere half hour away was...Brown Mountain!!!...Oh No, not Brown Mountain AGAIN!!!:raspberry: Yup folks, the nasty weather was headed east, so we headed west to the next best wheelin' spot that I knew had no creek crossings and we couldn't let our planned day go to waste...so off we went.:)

Original meeting spot, Wally World:puke:, three FJ's, a YotaRu and a Jeep.

Pleasantly surprised by the MUCH better weather that awaited us at BM.

blah...blah..blah, you've seen this rock before, and probably Jami's FJ by it.

Some mud wallowing did occur at our mud hole lunch spot. (a bit more later after some video sorting)

Break time near the top of the mountain...just before break time at the top of the mountain.

Chillin' at the top, on 'the REALLY big rock'.

Whelp, there was quite a bit more action after this, but I've only got more video. (slacker camera crew :poke:) We had to go through a bunch of deep mud holes beyond this point, and on the way out our friend John got a call from his wife that a tornado touched down near his house in Raleigh. We had to let him pass and high-tail it home. She is fine, but his house did suffer some damage, and apparently there were some woods behind his house that is now a field. Crazy weather day!!!

Whelp, we're going to try and reschedule our Richland Rd. trip, until then...

My 11yo. camera crew:rolleyes: somewhere in there managed to get a few shots of the flooded creek.

This was just a teaser for the puddles we were soon to encounter.

Narrow, rutted, last climb to the top.

This was one of about four puddles like this we had to cross, time to change the diff. oil!!!:iconwink: (and install diff. breathers:poke:)

That's all I've got, but all recorded with our new HD Flip camera.

Looks like you had a great time, even though you had to go to plan "B" for some wheeling

I like how they put the Road Subject To Flooding sign after the bridge & not before it :shake:   in the 2nd video.

Glad to hear that John's wife (& John) are ok after the tornado. Must have been very scary indeed
Hopefully their house only suffered minor damage & nothing too major.

Regards

Plan "B" worked out great!!! I'm glad we were right there. Although I have been there a bunch of times, and Jami has been there once, the other three had never been there so it was cool new ground for them. Also since the park had just opened for the season, it was a good bit rougher and more technical, I guess since it just has had more weather and less traffic to smooth everything out yet.

I do like the way the flood sign shows up in the video after the crossing. I'm sure there are a lot of those signs on that road though, after you turn off the main highway onto that road you pretty much drop down right into a huge flood plain, not somewhere I'd want a house.

My sister lives in Raleigh too, she was a bit further from the tornado than John's wife and she says she has never been so scared in her life!!! She's OK, and her house is fine, but she's been out and says the devastation is incredible.

Great to hear that everyone's safe. Even though it's heatrbreaking to see, things can be replaced, people & lives can't.
